Headaches occur from all kinds of reasons, ranging from mild, such as dehydration, to very rare, but severe, such as brain tumors or diabetes. More often though, headaches arise from muscle tension, stress, or irritation of the nerves and blood vessels in the neck. If you are suffering from chronic tension headaches, chiropractic treatment and registered massage therapy may help to relieve your pain.
Chiropractic is a health care profession focused on the non-surgical treatment of disorders or dysfunctions of the nervous system and/or musculoskeletal system, focusing greatly on spinal adjustments and treatment of surrounding structures. A chiropractor is able to help assess if your headache may be caused by any misaligned vertebrae in your spine, and using chiropractic adjustment techniques, realign and relieve pain. If you find yourself rubbing your neck and shoulders to find relief for your tension headaches or migraine, registered massage therapy may be the solution you are looking for. Tension headaches can be caused by poor posture, either while sitting, standing, or even sleeping. The strain caused by chronic poor posture and stress leads to micro tears in our muscles. Our bodies are amazing organisms, and to prevent the muscle from tearing further, our body forces the muscles to knot up. However, over time the knotted muscle can result is spasms, and if the muscle strain continues, the body heals the micro tears over the muscle spasms, essentially locking the spasms into place and creating chronic pain for you.
Massage therapy increases blood flow and stimulates circulation, while also relieving muscle spasms by loosening tight muscles. If you would like to set up an appointment to see if chiropractic treatment or registered massage therapy may help to relieve you of pain caused by tension headaches or migraines, please give us a call. If your headache has an underlying cause not treatable by chiropractic care or registered massage therapy, we are happy to refer you to a specialist.
Note from Dr. Michael: Hi everyone! Did you know that the average head weights 8-12lbs! That’s one heck of a watermelon or bowling ball we balance on our heads. Imagine the tension in the muscles and around the spine that accumulates while we sit, viewing a computer or reading a book. This tension accumulates to the point where the muscles fatigue around the head, and the nerves get upset and irritated. Presto – you have a headache.
If you chose to medicate your headaches, you may feel temporary relief for a period of time. However, you haven’t gotten to the source. Please allow us, one of the team members at Hycroft, to diagnose the source of your headaches and find solutions that will get you through the day.
All the best and look forward to working with you,
Dr. Michael Horowitz
