The Secrets to “Perfect” Posture

Blog by Dr. Michael Horowitz | April 28th, 2017

At one point or another, we’re all looking for ways to improve our posture. Whether it’s getting an ergonomic office chair, practicing mindfulness, or incorporating stretches or strength training into our daily routine. Everybody wants better posture. But where do we start?

To help all his patients seek “perfect” posture, Dr. Michael Horowitz offers these five points:Dr. M Horowitz.jpg

  1. Awareness – It is way too easy to forget about maintaining good posture, so it’s important to be aware of how you are sitting, standing, lifting, and sleeping as best you can.
  2. Your Feet – You may be wondering, “What do my feet have to do with my posture?” The ways that we walk and stand, our biomechanics, are heavily influenced by any abnormalities we may have in our feet or ankles, abnormalities such as flat feet or high arches. Faulty biomechanics directly influence our posture, and may make it difficult for us to maintain good posture. If you suspect you may have faulty biomechanics, it is important to have your feet assessed for custom orthotic inserts.
  3. Your Spine – This one seems like a no-brainer. Routine spinal check-ups and adjustments by your chiropractor can help to improve posture and flexibility in your spine. Chiropractors help with spinal alignment as well!
  4. Your Muscles – In addition to having your spine and the supporting structures adjusted for improved function and alignment, it is also important to maintain and build strength in the supporting muscles, like the lower and upper back and core. The stronger these supporting muscles become, the easier it will be for you to maintain perfect posture without the muscle fatigue that may cause you to slouch.
  5. Your Flexibility – Another key to maintaining perfect posture is increasing flexibility. You can do this with daily stretching, yoga, or massage. Looking for some new stretches? Subscribe to our FREE Stretch of the Day Series
